Does GPS Tracking Work for Dealership Lot Management?

GPS works for dealership lot management outdoors — vehicles in transit, loaners out with customers, open overflow lots — but GPS fails indoors and tracks nothing on a key. GPS positioning needs a clear view of the sky, so accuracy degrades or drops entirely inside service bays, detail shops, under canopies, and in multi-level parking structures. For inventory and keys on a dealership property, Bluetooth-based real-time location is the better fit.

Dealers search for "GPS tracking" because GPS is the name everyone knows. The requirement underneath that search is usually different: find any unit, and any key, anywhere on the property, in seconds. US dealers held 2.14 million used vehicles at the end of June 2026, at 47 days' supply and an average listing price of $27,027, according to Cox Automotive (2026). Theft is not the driver either — 659,880 vehicles were stolen nationwide in 2025, a 23% decrease from 2024, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. The case for tracking inventory is operational, not defensive.

What's the difference between GPS tracking and Bluetooth RTLS?

GPS tracking locates a vehicle using satellite signal. Bluetooth RTLS — a real-time location system — locates a tag using fixed readers installed across the property, indoors and out. Satellite versus on-site readers drives every difference below.

How does GPS tracking actually work?

GPS tracking works by receiving timing signals from satellites overhead. A receiver mounted in or on a vehicle listens to several satellites at once, calculates position from the differences between those signals, then reports that position over a cellular connection. The whole chain depends on one condition: the receiver has to see the sky.

That design came out of long-haul fleet management, where a truck spends its working life on open road. The receiver is usually wired into vehicle power or plugged into the OBD-II port, because continuous satellite reception plus a cellular radio draws real current.

When is GPS the right tool for a dealership?

GPS is the right tool whenever the vehicle is off your property and under open sky. Four cases where GPS genuinely wins:

  • Vehicles in transit. A unit moving between rooftops or coming off a transporter is exactly what GPS was built to follow.
  • Loaners and demos out with a customer. A loaner sitting at a customer's house is far beyond the range of any on-site reader network. GPS reaches it.
  • Repossession and collections. Recovering a financed vehicle from an unknown address is a job only satellite tracking does.
  • Open, unpaved overflow lots. A gravel overflow lot with clear sky and no power runs is awkward to cover with fixed readers, and GPS works there with no infrastructure.

Give GPS full credit for those four. A dealership running a large loaner fleet, or financing its own paper, has a real reason to keep GPS.

Why does GPS lose accuracy on a dealership property?

GPS loses accuracy on a dealership property because a dealership is mostly roof. Satellite signal needs sky view, so a GPS position drifts or drops entirely inside service bays, inside the detail shop, under the front-line canopy, and inside a multi-level parking structure. The position goes stale, and stale is worse than blank, because stale looks correct.

GPS also has no useful concept of vertical position at dealership scale. A GPS reading cannot tell a porter which floor of a six-story parking garage a car is parked on — precisely the moment a salesperson is standing in front of a customer, waiting.

Can a GPS tracker find a lost key fob?

No. A GPS tracker is a powered device sized and wired for a vehicle, not for a key ring, so keys fall entirely outside GPS's scope. That is a serious gap, because the key is the most-lost item in a dealership and the item that stops a road test, a write-up, and a delivery.

Losing keys is not cheap. Car key replacement at a dealership runs from under $50 for a basic blade key to more than $600 for a smart key, according to Edmunds (updated March 2025), and a laser-cut key with dealership labor runs $150 to $300. Every replacement is a cost your vehicle tracking system did nothing to prevent.

What should you compare before buying a tracking system?

Six questions separate a system built for a dealership from a system borrowed out of another industry. Ask every one during the demo, standing on your own property.

  • What physically gets installed? A device per vehicle, a device per key, readers on the buildings, or all three.
  • Is anything hard-wired into the vehicle? Hard-wiring means a technician touches every unit at stock-in and again at delivery, and a wholesaled unit drives off with your hardware in it.
  • Where does the power come from? Vehicle power, the OBD-II port, or a battery — and if a battery, how many years it lasts and whether the system warns you before it dies.
  • Does it work on keys? Ask directly. A system that tracks vehicles but not keys solves half the problem a dealership has.
  • What is the indoor accuracy? Demand a live demo in your busiest service bay and on the lowest level of your garage, not on the front line.
  • What happens at stock-in and at delivery? Time both. Anything that adds real minutes per unit quietly stops being done by week three.

How does Bluetooth real-time location work on a dealership lot?

Bluetooth real-time location works by attaching a low-power tag to each vehicle and each key, then reading those tags with fixed readers installed across the property, indoors included. Mobile Dealer Data (MDD) built MDD Locate on that model, and states the position plainly: "MDD uses Bluetooth, not GPS. GPS goes blind indoors."

What else do dealers ask about GPS on the lot?

Does GPS work inside a parking garage?

GPS does not work reliably inside a parking garage. GPS positioning depends on line of sight to satellites, and a concrete structure blocks that signal, so the last reported position goes stale rather than updating. GPS also cannot distinguish one level of a garage from another, which makes it unusable for finding a specific car in a multi-level structure.

Does Mobile Dealer Data use GPS?
